Once again, my children are a reminder to me to never forget the power of play. My son wanted to have a little mommy and me time so after listing off 10 different things to do (and having him say no to everyone "too boring mom") we finally agreed to mold some clay. We sat down in my craft room and I was surrounded by my unfinished cards and paintings. I tried to be sneaky and offered to let him play with the clay while I painted next to him. Nothing doin'. So I put down my brush and grabbed some clay.
I didn't go willingly, in fact I was kind of being grumpy about it at first. Then I started to relax and enjoy the feeling of the clay in my hands. It was cool to the touch and the colors were actually really beautiful.
I've been drawn to swirls a lot lately, I'm putting them in my mandalas and other art work a lot lately. The clay really lent itself to this image and before I knew it i was making these cute little mandalas. Mixing the clay made some great swirls within the image. Twisting the clay and rolling it in different ways allowed me to express myself in ways I cannot normally do with markers and paper. My son recognized the shapes immediately and said, "Yeah, when I said I wanted to use clay I thought you might want to use it for a mandala." Maybe he did and maybe he didn't but I have to thank him for showing me yet another way to find some peace in my day.
